I'm the new kid in school. Things are just so different!

It can be challenging going to a new school.

You’re in a new environment and you can’t figure out where the lab or the cafeteria is.

You feel sad leaving your previous school and friends, and you’re unsure if you’ll fit in at the new school.

Don’t worry. These are perfectly normal feelings! Everyone experiences this transition in their lives at one point or another. So you are not alone!

Accepting change

Some of us hate change. It breaks our routines and takes away the familiarity that we’re comfortable with.

Ironically, change brings excitement to our routine lifestyle. From simple things like rearranging the furniture to a new hairstyle, these little changes add freshness and excitement to our lives.

But big changes, such as switching to a new school and making new friends can cause you to feel overwhelmed. Perhaps it’s not something that you look forward to right now, but it’s only a matter of time before you feel right at home in your new school and with your new friends. All you need is the right attitude to accept change positively!

Adapting to change

You may feel anxious or stressed about starting from scratch in a new school. But change happens all the time and you can make it work for you by turning the change into something positive and exciting. So try these steps to help yourself adjust better:

  • Be positive. Just relax, be confident and explore the new school environment. Take it as an adventure! Soon you’ll find that you actually do enjoy the excitement that comes with this new place and the surprises that it may hold.

  • Make new friends. New friends will help you ease into your new environment. They can help show you around, introduce you to more friends, and share their activities with you. And you always need friends, because people are happier when they have a network of friends to rely on. So don’t be afraid. Go ahead and get to know your classmates!

  • Be yourself. Don’t worry if others will like you. Just relax and let your personality shine through. You will fit in easily when you stop fretting so much!

  • Overcome your shyness. Take the initiative to approach your fellow students in class and introduce yourself. Be friendly and more people will want to get to know you.

  • Be active in school activities. Pick a sport or CCA you’re interested in and join in the fun! With similar interests, it’ll be easier to spin off conversations and initiate friendships with other participants. It’s also a great way to familiarise yourself with the new environment.

  • Keep in touch. Get support from your family and friends from your previous school. They will bring you some comfort during your time of transition.

Overcoming Challenges

As you adapt to the new environment and people, you may find that some things did not meet your expectations. Perhaps it’s taking a little longer than you thought to find a good friend, or maybe it isn’t as fun as you expected it to be.

Do not be discouraged. Rethink and readjust your expectations – maybe they were a little unrealistic. Don’t isolate yourself. Instead, think positive and keep trying! Most people usually adjust to their new environment within a few months. You’ll feel happier once you are settled in!

However, if you find that you are still feeling sad and anxious, it’s best to seek help from your parents or school counsellors. Adapting to change may be a challenge, but don’t let it affect your life negatively.
