It's the school holidays again!

Finally you can relax. There’s no homework or exams to worry about because it’s the school holidays again!

Instead of staying idle and wasting most of your time, why not try something different? You can take up a vacation job, do volunteer work or learn a new skill!

It’ll be a fresh and exciting experience, and you won’t ever complain that your holidays are boring.

Get a vacation job

The extra pocket money from a vacation job may be a great motivation, but do make sure you choose a safe job. Avoid jobs that require you to work alone late at night, or expose you to physical danger.

Most of all, you’ll find it more fulfilling to do something that you have a passion for or a strong belief in, rather than doing it for money or glory. Volunteering is a good way to show your support for a cause that you strongly believe in. You may not have money to donate, but you can always contribute your time and effort!

Vacation jobs and volunteer work open up a world that you cannot experience while in school, and you can benefit a lot from them:

  • Gain real work experience. You will be exposed to how the real world functions. Learn how to work as a team with different kinds of people, and improve your communication and leadership skills.

  • Make friends. You will get to meet interesting people outside your usual social circle, and find new friends with similar interests.

  • Grow in maturity. Through the various tasks that you’ll be assigned to during your job, you will gradually learn how to handle responsibilities and work independently.

  • Boost self-esteem. Your achievements at work, whether big or small, will also be a source of pride, happiness and confidence for you. It’s also the time to explore your strengths beyond what you think you are good at.

If you like interacting with new people every day, try service oriented jobs such as out as a receptionist at an office. If the art of coffee-brewing piques your interest, you can try working as a barista in a cafe!

For animal lovers, you can volunteer to help walk the dogs at animal shelters. You can also give back to the community and help out at hospices, children’s shelters, or any other charitable organisations!

Learn a new skill

You can also choose to pick up a new skill or hone your existing talents. You will find that cultivating a new hobby is a great way to enrich yourself. And you get to make new friends as well!

Here are some suggested activities you can pick up during your holidays:

  • Learn how to play a new musical instrument.
  • Join an art workshop and get in touch with your creative side.
  • Get healthy and try a new sport like wakeboarding or hockey.
  • Improve your computer skills. Learn how to use new software and mould yourself into a tech guru among your friends!

Strike a balance

While it is a good idea to occupy yourself with productive activities, don’t forget to manage your time. It is the holidays after all, so make sure you still have time for your family, your friends and yourself!

Make the best out of your school holiday. Enrich yourself and make your experience a meaningful one. Take it easy, and enjoy the experience!
